How to make felt flowers

There are a variety of flowers you can make out of felt, so I have broken this article into 3 categories.

Equipment that you’ll need

  • A hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Felt of your choice
  • A needle
  • Thread

Felt roses

Step 1: To create felt roses, begin by selecting your felt. Next, you will need to cut large circles out of your felt. Choose a color of felt for your roses.

Step 2: Cut your felt. To start your rose, begin with a felt circle. It doesn’t need to be a perfect circle, so you can either trace an object or freehand it as you cut with scissors. Cut the circle anywhere from 4–10 inches in diameter depending on how large you would like your rose to be.

Step 3: Create a spiral. Use a pair of scissors to cut a spiral into your felt circle. Start at one edge, and cut a spiral inwards using a wavy-cut until you reach the center of the circle. Cut a wavy pattern around the edge of the circle as well, so that you are left with a flat spiral.

Step 4: Roll up the spiral. Begin rolling the felt inwards, starting at the outside edge of the spiral. Pinch the base of the spiral as you roll to create the base of the flower. When the spiral is completely rolled up, it will look like a rose!

Step 5: Secure the rose shape. Turn your felted rose over and use a needle and thread to secure the spiral together. Tie a knot at one end of your thread and add several stitches to the back to keep the layers of the rose in place. Tie off your thread with another knot, and you’ll be left with a beautiful felt flower! Consider choosing additional shades of green felt to create leaves for your rose.

Felt peonies

Step 1: Select your felt. This method of making peonies requires long, thin strips of felt. You can use any color you would like.

Step 2: Cut your felt to the right size. To make a peony, your felt strips will need to be 1½ inch wide and whatever length you would like. However, you should note that the longer the piece of felt you use, the larger your flower will be.

Step 3: Glue your strips. To create the felt flower petals, you will need to create a loop out of each strip of felt. To do this, fold the felt in half and dab glue along the edge of the fabric all the way across the strip. Hold the edges together until the glue has dried, forming a long, narrow tube.

Step 4: Create your petals. Use a pair of scissors to cut small cuts in the loop. Cut notches that go ⅔ of the way down the loop and are ¼ inch apart. You will end up with multiple small loops attached along a single band of felt at the bottom.

Step 5: Roll up the peony. Begin rolling the felt strip inwards along the glued bottom edge. As you roll, place more glue on the inside of the felt along the edges so that the flower holds together well. When you finish it, add more glue to secure it in place.

Step 6: Finish the felt peony. When the flower has been rolled up completely, you’ll have yourself a peony! To be safe, you can add a few stitches of thread alongside the glue that you used to ensure that the flower stays together. In addition, you can also add a few felt leaves to complete the flower and for a more authentic feel!

Felt delilahs

Step 1: Choose the right felt for the job. You can choose any color you wish, however, dahlias require many small parts and therefore require a lot of felt. Make sure that you have multiple full-sized strips of fabric to make this flower!

Step 2: To create dahlias with three layers of petals, you will need to cut three sections of felt in differing sizes. Cut 16 rectangles measuring ½ inch x 2 inches, cut 10 rectangles measuring ½ inch by 1½ inches, and 7 rectangles measuring ½ inch x 1 inch. In addition, you will also need a circular base measuring 3 inches.

Step 3: Cut up your petals. To form the shape of the petals, draw an oblong diamond shape onto each rectangle. Have two points in the center across the length, and add two more points ⅓ of the way from the top across the width. Cut these shapes out.

Step 4: Adjust the shape. Use your scissors to sculpt each petal into the correct shape. Round the edges of the two points nearest to the top of the diamond, and cut ¼ of the way up the petal straight across to create a horizontal base.

Step 5: Form the petals. Add a dab of hot glue at the base of each petal, and fold the sides in until they meet at the center. This will leave the top part of the petal open while creating a rolled edge and pleat down the center of the bottom of the petal.

Step 6: Combine the petals, adding the largest petals first and working your way round.

Step 7: Add the second and third layer of petals until you’re left with a beautiful flower! Add a button to finish it off. You’ll have a delilah!
